During the first half of lab meeting, Kevin Hong will present on the following:

"Most evolutionary studies on contemporary homo sapiens have focused on using adaptations to ancestral environment to explain why humans are the way they are. However, in evolutionary terms, contemporary western societies are exerting selective pressure that none of our ancestors had experience before. Can we say something about the future of humanity using the logic of evolution?

Here I present a simulation that takes insight from recent empirical studies on the genetic/genomic basis of education attainment and examines its short term evolutionary dynamics. In short, I show that the observed decoupling of phenotype and genotype can be explained by some intuitive yet subtle interaction between gene and culture. In addition, I present possibilities of harnessing the power of agent based simulation to make quantitative predictions of our own species future evolutionary trajectory regarding particular traits."

Then, we'll take some time to discuss a recent paper on hunter-gatherer networks:

Migliano, A.B. et al. (2017). Characterization of hunter-gatherer networks and implications for cumulative culture. *Nature Human Behaviour 1,* 0043.
